Coaching the baseball strike zone to youth baseball players is a continual process and a complicated one. I say complicated for a couple of reasons. First, many beginners have little understanding of the game of baseball, mainly because today's kids do not watch the game much as they did years ago. They must learn what constitutes a strike, a ball and the overall strike zone. Secondly, just telling a ballplayer what the strike zone parameters are, do not make it easy to follow and automatically pick up.

Many youth play in fall baseball leagues these days. I am all for kids doing that as long as they have time away from the game in the winter. The problem is that baseball is not an easy game to succeed at. If players are only playing games without another day or two of practice, the results may harm players going into the following year more than help them. Not only can their confidence be affected negatively, injuries, especially to the throwing arm, are more possible without other days of throwing.

I wish my coaches had used the show and tell baseball coaching technique when I was playing baseball, as the knowledge of how and why I was doing baseball skills would have helped me make necessary adjustments, when things were not going so well. If I only knew then what I know now a coach's constant lament. It is difficult for coaches to know what ballplayers are really learning.
