BBCOR (Bat-Ball Coefficient of Restitution) is a certification standard established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) for baseball bats used in high school and collegiate play. The standard ensures that the ball-exit speed off the bat is controlled and not excessively high, for the safety of players and improved performance of the game.
BBCOR certified bats have a maximum barrel diameter of 2 5/8 inches and must have a negative (-3) weight drop, meaning the length to weight ratio of the bat must be minus three ounces. This weight drop provides a balanced swing weight for players, making it easier for them to control their swing and make better contact with the ball. BBCOR bats are also required to have a mark indicating their certification, usually located on the barrel or handle of the bat.
