Tony Dungy Philosophy

Tony Dungy gives youth sports coaches a great lesson.

"What the heck are you guys doing you are embarrassing me, we are going to run and run when this game is over." -typical youth sports' coach statement.

Anyone who has been around youth sports has witnessed this coach before. He believes the games are all about him and is out only to win. Today, I want to tell you a story I read about another of the best coaches former football coach Tony Dungy A reporter asked Tony if he ever aired out his team to motivate them. Remember, ever, was included in the question His reply, no. He did not believe that was a coaching method that ever worked. Wow, never once he said, and in the sport of football, known for its aggressiveness. Tony Dungy also never swore to get a point across to his teams. Again, never. I hear youth sports coaches do it a lot. I guess that makes them the tough guy coach they desire to be and that a few f-bombs will motivate their teams. To me, it is a sign of insecurity. The Tony Dungy story speaks for itself and is a valuable lesson for youth coaches. The games are not about you when you coach kids' sports.

Tony Dungy and other greats

In my latest book, Creating a Season to Remember,I analyze many of the greatest sports coaches teaching techniques like coach Dungy and try to find things that make them unique. Guys like Chicago Cubs skipper Joe Madden, football's Pete Carroll and basketball's Mike Krzyzewski, just to name a few. Thanks for checking back in, hope to see you again tomorrow and if so inclined, share my book trailers with your friends and coaches. The book is now available on Amazon. Remember, Every coach is capable of creating a season to remember.
