Helping players develop a good hitter's mindset is a constant coaching task. It is best when players go into the season with it. As a hitting coach, there are two things I preach, so baseball players do not get down on themselves, a common thing with the difficulty of hitting a baseball. First, I want them to have the right goals. The best goals involve having quality at bats, as opposed to getting hits. Hits come and go with some amount of luck involved, but quality at bats are under a player's control. A quality at bat is simply putting good swings on good pitches to hit. Doing that as often as possible leads to hits in the end. Second, I want players to forget the bad at bats and only remember the good ones. Dwelling on the bad ones puts them in a negative hitter's mindset that sets them up for failure.
