Short and Long-Term Goals - Tip of the Week

A very necessary point I make and revisit with my students and with their parents is that some changes are easy ones and some take much longer. Of course, easy is a relative term because there is nothing easy when it comes to perfecting baseball skills. A common and frequent baseball coaching statement goes like this, "Our long range goal is to fix this." The point I am trying to make is that some habits are very difficult to change and if people expect them to come overnight with a lesson or two, frustration will set in for them. Of course, good coaches must recognize and differentiate which habit changes are short and long-term goals, as they change for every player. When coaches explain that some changes will take quite a while, others understand the nature of sport and develop the patience to stick with things.
