"I know you have been playing for a couple of weeks, but your season begins tomorrow." Kids look at me like I am confused, but I insist that they must believe that the season can start again in their mind. It is no fun getting off to a slow or terrible start with the bat or on the pitching mound, but that is common for many baseball players, experienced or not. Becoming dejected is normal, but players must continue to work and believe they will come around. I often tell players to forget their start and begin anew with their next game. I usually see players' eyes light up and have hope again with that idea.

One of the best lessons athletes learn is that they cannot go back and redo the past, but they can clear their mind and begin anew in their mind. Developing a "season restarts everyday" is the hopeful attitude of the great players. Of course, that attitude helps those off to a great start too, to not live on their laurels and go out and do it again. "You are only as good as your last game" is another typical coaching statement.
