Jack Perconte played major league baseball before becoming a full time baseball and softball instructor. He began writing after selling his sports academy. His numerous playing, coaching, and parenting experiences help adults become better equipped when working with youth athletes.
What inspired you to write?
Jack Perconte: I believe my numerous experiences will help adults to become better equipped when working with youth athletes. My writing offers a practical expertise that people relate to. I feel if it helps even one child have a better life experience in sports, it will have been worth the effort.
How did you know you wanted to be a writer? How did you get started?
Jack Perconte: I always wanted to write a book but did not know if I was capable until I began writing. I never felt I was very creative but surprised myself. My experiences gave me so much information so there was no other research involved.
Tell us about The Making of a Hitter: A Proven and Practical Step-by-Step Baseball Guide
Jack Perconte: I noticed many books on the market that showed people how to hit but none that specifically taught how to teach hitting to players of all skill levels. My book breaks hitting down into the basics and gives readers a systematic approach to teaching the art of hitting. It even tells adults the exact words to use when teaching along with numerous illustrations and drills to do a thorough job when coaching ball players.
Tell us about your second book
Jack Perconte: Raising an Athlete: How to Instill confidence, Build Skills and Inspire a Love of Sport is about my playing, coaching, and parenting experiences. It is about finding positive solutions to all the challenging issues adults and kids encounter in youth sports.
So many parents are not prepared for the challenges of youth sports issues like bad coaching, unmotivated kids, boys and girls not having fun, players who lack confidence, parents "pushing" too hard, athletic burnout, etc"¦ I help adults keep youth sports in perspective, so kids have the positive sport experiences they deserve to have.
Most stories are about athletes that I played with or against, coaches that I have played under or worked with and parents that I have dealt with.
What do you believe is the hardest part of writing?
Jack Perconte: There are so many ways of saying the same thing structuring sentences in the way that gets the point across is a big challenge.
What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?
Jack: Go for it find the best time of day where the mind is most creative, write from the heart and find that one thing that spurs your creativity.
