What Makes Baseball Teams a Target for Hacks?
By Chris Sloan, 0 CommentsThere is absolutely nothing worse than parents who yell and scream from the stands! Of all the things that get me going as a coach, not being able to control myself and act like an adult is probably my biggest baseball pet peeve. I've been around long enough to have witnessed countless parents making a scene at a little league game or baseball tournament. That behavior isn't acceptable, and some screaming parents who rage out need to be put on notice. Shouting at baseball coaches, the umpires, the other fans, and heaven forbid your own kid just won't be tolerated.
If the situation gets too heated, we end up having fights, injuries, and police reports and I've seen them all! I think one of the issues that perpetuates this is the "undercover" presence of alcohol at youth sporting events and a lowered ability to make rational decisions. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy an adult beverage from time to time, heck I can't wait for the new Garrison Brothers Lady Bird Bourbon to be released, but that doesn't mean I would show up with drinks at a youth ball game. I realize that many travel parents spend their entire weekend at baseball events so it's going to happen, but I recommend leaving that at home or until after the games.
In this episode, I talk about 3 ways parents scream and yell that have to go:
1. Shouting at the Coach
2. Yelling at the Umpire
3. Screaming at the Players
Bonus: Raging at other parents.
To me this type of behavior isn't acceptable, no matter who you are. Remember everyone is likely there to relax and have a good time so don't be that guy, or girl, who ruins it for everyone!
Sit down, shut up, leave the drinks at home, and enjoy the game!
