Baseball Throws to Think Twice About

When it comes to making baseball throws, it is best when players play with no fear. However, some baseball throws are trickier than others are, and good players must think twice before making them. Quick thoughts race through good ballplayer's minds in a heartbeat, as, "What are the odds of getting the guy out, and based on those odds, is it worth the risk?" Making the wrong decision with those tough baseball throw decisions may cost teams the game. Of course, there is a right way to play the game of baseball that takes many young ball players years to learn. Often at the youth levels, players see base runners off a base and automatically think they must try to get the runner out. Once again, some baseball throws are not worth the risk, as often, "The best throw is a no throw," is a good philosophy. Good baseball coaches do not scold players for making unnecessary baseball throws because developing aggressive players, who are unafraid, is good. However, coaches use those moments to teach players about the odds and consequences of some plays, helping them learn the finer points of the game. Following are the riskiest throws by position that players must learn to take careful analysis of before making.

Riskiest Pitcher Baseball Throws

  1. The breaking ball or off speed pitch with a runner on third base has a greater chance of going in the dirt, leading to a wild pitch. Pitchers must have great trust in the catcher's ability to block dirt balls before throwing, otherwise, it may be best to stay with the fastball.
  2. Any pickoff throw to base when the runner does not have that big of lead ore when the runner is not a base stealing threat. Holding runners on does not mean pitchers throw to the bases just for that reason, as varying the timing of delivering pitches, is as effective without the risk of an overthrow in those situations.

Tricky Catcher Position Baseball Throws

  1. The throw to third base, anytime, is very precarious one, as the consequences of a bad one are usually a run scored. Often, catchers have to throw around the batter and/or have to throw around a retreating base runner, making this a tough throw.
  2. Any throw to a base with a runner on third base, especially with a close game and late in the game. The most obvious of these situations is the double steal attempt, when the opposition hopes to get an easy run with a runner at first and third base. Having catchers hold the ball or fake the throw to second is often best at the lower levels of baseball.

Middle Infielder's Baseball Throws to Think Twice AboutBaseball Throws

  1. Completing the double play with a runner on or approaching third base is one that may not be worth making when players feel the odds of getting the second out are minimal.

Dangerous Third Base Baseball Throws

The charge play throw on slow rollers is a difficult one that is unnecessary. Sometimes it is best that third baseman just "eats" this throw in order to avoid creating putting a base runner in scoring position, if not worse.

Precarious Outfield Baseball Throws

  1. Any throw that misses the cutoff person is one of those risky baseball throws that players have to avoid.
  2. Throwing behind the runner to the base the runner is basically already at is an unnecessary throw that leads to trouble, often.

Once again, youth baseball coaches are there to help players learn which throws are best and when, so ballplayers develop great baseball instincts.
